On propose day today, sharing something about perhaps the oldest love proposal. Rukmini the Princess of Vidarbha kingdom came to know about the beauty and valor of Krishna, lord of Dwarka. She immediately fell in love with him. Her brother, however wanted to have her married to his friend and political ally, Shishupal, King of Chedi kingdom. Rukmini couldn't revolt against her powerful brother so she wrote a letter to Krishna expressing her love and asking him to come to her kingdom and rescue her. Krishna, after learning about Rukmini's plea, immediately started off from Dwarka and reached Vidarbha. He took away Rukmini from a temple and faced her brother Rukmi in a fierce duel. Krishna defeated Rukmi but let him live because of his relation with Rukmini. Krishna's brothers and relatives also arrived to fight all other enemies. Rukmi never forgets the insult but somehow keeping it aside comes to aid of Pandavas before the kurukshetra war. He asks Arjun to not be afraid since he has come to help, to which Arjun is furious and tells Rukmi that he has Krishna with him so there's no reason to fear and rejects his offer. Insulted, Rukmi goes to Duryodhana offering his help but he too rejects it saying he didn't come to him first. Frustrated, Rukmi abstains from the war and is later killed many years later at the hands of Krishna's brother Balram. The story of Rukmini's letter is in Bhagwat Puran, while Harivansha (appendix to Mahabharata) simply mentions Krishna abducts Rukmini and challenges the Vidarbha warriors. Nevertheless thought of sharing with you. Happy propose day!!
