This warrior princess and her parents are moving on to the next chapter and we are so happy for them! Aubriella is a sweet little girl who was born with #VACTERL. Children with VACTERL can have vertebral, anorectal, cardiac, tracheoesophageal, renal and limb anomalies. Aubriella has already undergone many, many surgeries in her life to repair her heart, spine, and anorectal issues. We addressed her anorectal malformation with a surgery called PSARP (posterior sagittal anorectoplasty). After her most recent visit, we found her to be in a good, stable place, and she no longer needs to see us on a regular basis 🙏. Her next chapter will include medications to make sure she is regular and, when she’s ready, toilet training. . . With all of her complex medical conditions, Aubriella needed the highest level of pediatric specialty care. At @chocchildrens, we have the experts, infrastructure, and desire to deliver the care that she needs. We. Do. Complex. And we know that it’s going to be a lifelong journey with her. As long as this sweet, strong girl and her family need us, we are here for them ❤️👊. #longlivechildhood #pediatricsurgery #nicubaby #nicugrad #nicumom #nicunurse #cvicu #cvicunurse #cvicugrad #chdwarrior #chdawareness #congenitalheartdisease #nextchapter #happyholidays

I have spent a lot of my life in hospitals, thankfully not because I’ve personally been sick (minus two easy surgeries). I basically grew up in the hospital my mom worked at; having wheelchair races down the hall, doing homework in break rooms, and enjoying hospital food with various employees and patients. So I guess no surprise when I chose to spend the majority of my adult life in one. I’m sure I will eventually want the ease of a stable clinic job with less grueling hours and a less stressful environment, but for now I’ve been enjoying the tedium of intensive care units and the massive amounts of learning that accompany that. Even if it means sacrificing some of the time I spend on reading for my own amusement. ~Nora . . . . . #Bookstagrammer #recentlyread #booksofinstagram #bibliophile #bookish #bookreview #nonfiction #bookrecommendation #booklover #death #medicine #nursepractitioner #intensivecareunit #fellowship #cardiac #cvicu #medicaluniversity #constantlylearning #textbook #studygram #studymotivation #study

I doubted myself this semester… I thought I was not going to make it… Numerous sleepless nights and still failing my med-surg exams… Coming back from the hospital at 12am every Tuesday and studying afterwards messed my schedule up… Every time taking an exam and having that voice in my head saying, probably, I am going to fail this one as well. I had nights where I didn’t see reasons to study, where I was about to give up and where I was thinking about a plan B. Today was the last day of school, I passed my last final exam of 2019. 1st semester of a junior year is a history now. And you know what, I passed everything… Somehow everything worked out and those challenges are not that big anymore. The reason I’ve decided to share this with you is just to show you that you are not alone. We all have those moments, we all fail and we all doubt ourselves. One thing I realized, you can be the smartest or the most beautiful person in the world and everybody sees intelligence, light and rainbows when they think about you, but if you yourself don’t know it, all of that doesn’t really matter. Every single second you spend on doubting your ability, your worth or your intelligence, every moment that you use to criticize yourself, is a second of your life wasted, is a moment of your life being thrown away... Pretty certain people know my love for my profession and especially Cardiology! I was blessed with being on the CVICU unit and it was an amazing day! I never thought when I started my journey at @nursingatust that I would really be where I’m at! I’m grateful and blessed to have just finished Critical Care and Behavioral Health and time have only 156 days till I walk across that stage for graduation (God willingly)! I’m blessed and grateful to those in my life and I’m beyond grateful to those that went through my highest highs and rock bottom lows. Thank you for being there when I was broken and when I had to put kitty down in February, through my first ever panic attack and the fifteen thousand times I’ve moved this year! I couldn’t have done any of this without the phenomenal people in my life and I’m grateful beyond words! The past two days have been the best! The worst part is due to HIPPA I can’t share it with anyone. That has to be the biggest downside to working in healthcare. You have an amazing day and run around for 12 hours with that stupid cheesy grin and you can’t tell anyone!! It’s so annoying. I can’t say though that I’ve had such a great time the past 48 hours. I may have pissed a few people off with my enthusiasm but I don’t care. One piece of advice for those people is find a new line of work. If you aren’t loving your job daily then leave. Stop ruining it for the rest of us. I’m not talking about the occasional bad day. I’m talking about 💯 of the time grumpy, parasites that suck the life out of you. #happy #rn2md #travelnurselife #travelnurse #cvicu #cardiacnurse #pedsnurse

N U R S E appreciation post** 10 years ago I made the decision to devote myself as a person to becoming a nurse. To be there for a complete stranger and give my all to make their day a bit better even when they feel like all hope is lost whether it was the patient or their family. To this day best decision I have made even though I have had some rough shifts in the 6 years I have been registered I never regret my decision to becoming a registered nurse for new Zealand. I am always told it takes a certain somebody to do the job I do and I completely agree it takes alot of courage, determination, positivity, strength, sacrifice to be a nurse and I am grateful for those qualities within me to keep me going back each shift and to smile even if I am burning out. Take care of each other. Be grateful for your health and your life as i have seen the worst of others. 6 years ago - Class of 2013!!! Wow, time flies 😳 I was so happy to have finally finished one of the hardest chapters of my life. Some people breeze through nursing school. Not I - I failed a class, was held back a semester, and couldn’t graduate with my cohort. I ugly cried for a few hours but got my shit together and pushed through. Two months after this picture was taken I took one of the hardest tests of my life, the dreaded NCLEX. That test is one hell of a beast but I passed on my first try with 78 questions. I was finally an RN!! I took an unconventional route but I made it. I had, and still have, an amazing support system and look forward to where this amazing career will take me!! . . . .✨Lets disregard the lack of brows and mismatched foundation in the 2nd photo 😩. 6 shifts down and headed to NYC tomorrow for some events with @wearfigs and @boardvitals and some alone time with my bae ♥️ The last 6 work days have been exceptionally busy and I’ve learned a lot about livers, hematomas, gynecology consults, drug resistant bacteria, HIT, VAV ECMO, and thats all great but I learned even more from one of my 80-something patients. He lives with his friends and when his buddies’ wife died last year he invited his buddy to come live in his house with himself and two others. He told me he was ready to get home so he could go back to arguing with them and chatting with them. He said, “it’s bad to be alone, especially when your 80, so even if it’s arguing, I’d rather be with them, than without them.” And I’ll leave it to that. 🥺 * * @nurseabnormalities #nurseabnormalities #nurselife #cvicu #cardiacicu #nursingstudent #nursesofinstagram #womeninmedicine #nurseblogger

7 years ago today I officially became a nurse. I started off my nursing career as a naive, nineteen year old LPN. I can truly say I’ve grown into my role as an RN. And for me becoming an LPN made me the awesome nurse I am today. So to celebrate here are 7 Things I’ve learned in my 7 years of Nursing 👩🏽‍⚕️ : ⠀ 1. You never stop being a student. No matter how much experience you have or what speciality you’re in you are ALWAYS learning. Knowledge and experience comes with time. Every situation you go through can be used for learning. ⠀ 2. ALWAYS ask questions. Especially if your unsure or have that “nurse gut” feeling! ⠀ 3. It’s OK !!! I found this lesson out early on. You don’t have to go in on your day off. It’s OK to use PTO. It’s OK to not answer your phone! Its OK to call out if you’re sick! Its OK to not be ok. It’s OK to feel doubt or cry. It’s OK to put you and your family first. Remember that!! ⠀ 4. Mistakes happen but you have to learn from them. Plain and Simple! ⠀ 5. Stand up for yourself. From nursing home to hospital, coworkers to patients to management. Stand up for yourself! It is not okay to take disrespect or unacceptable behavior from anyone. PERIOD!!! ⠀ 6. Take care of yourself. Whether that means sleeping in late, exercise, drinking water, vacations you name it!!! You have to take care of yourself! You can’t take care of other people if you’re not taking care of yourself! No pouring from an empty cup sis... it’s empty! ⠀ 7. If you’re not happy in your current position. You’re a nurse !!! You have unlimited position and possibilities and your happiness is not worth the money. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

Why did I become a CRNA? . . I enjoy thinking through situations and how they can relate back to a particular disease process. . . I also enjoy the complexity of how every individual is different and no two patients, no matter how similar on the surface they appear, will have exactly the same needs and even outcomes. . . I love always trying to stay one step ahead and anticipating what will come next. . . I enjoy pharmacology and pathophysiology. . . I love how a CRNA gets to be one on one with their patient. . . I love how a CRNA’s job is to advocate for the patient and to anticipate their needs. . . I enjoy being hands on and doing tasks. . . I could keep going on and on☺️ . . What is your reason for wanting to be a CRNA?

TAVR Tuesday tidbit - Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement or TMVR. . Although we do not have an approved device to percutaneously replace a native mitral valve (yet), we ARE able to treat a degenerated mitral valve bioprosthesis for either stenosis or regurgitation using a TAVR valve. We treat this similar to a valve-in-valve TAVR procedure as we have the frame of the bioprosthetic mitral valve as our map and as scaffolding. . ➡️To accomplish this we go into the femoral vein, up the IVC into the right atrium, puncture across the septum to the left atrium, cross the mitral valve with a wire, and position a Sapien balloon expandable TAVR valve inside the old prosthetic mitral valve and deploy it. . 👀 What you see here is: 1️⃣ Deployment of the Sapien valve inside the old prosthetic mitral valve. 2️⃣ Still frame of the video with some labels . Although we do not have a catheter based option to fully replace native mitral valves yet, it’s a hot area of research! . Tag a friend below 👇

I know nursing/ medical school is hard. I know sometimes you feel like giving up. I know you have good days and bad days but more bad than good or so it seems. I know every day you question yourself “what is this all for?”, “Am I making the right choices?” or “am I supposed to be here now?” I know sometimes you have more questions than answers and sometimes you don’t know how to explain them. I know nursing/medical school is hard, but you have to keep going. You have to raise above the waters of your soul, and bloom, no matter how hot the fire is. No matter how many arrows you carry on your back (job, family, disease), believe me, you are a warrior. You are a soldier filled with both pain and love. Anesthesia schools are focusing their interview process on looking for these characteristics. Ask yourself: Do I become defensive when criticized? . . Can I stay calm under pressure? . . Can I handle setbacks effectively? . . Can I manage anxiety, stress, anger & fear in pursuit of a goal? . . Can I utilize criticism and other feedback for growth? . . Am I positive? . . Can I maintain a sense of humor? . . Can I try to see things from another’s perspective? . . Can I recognize how my behavior affects others? . . Can I air grievances skillfully? . . Can I listen without jumping to judgement? . . Can I freely admit to making a mistake? . . *These qualities are the basis for emotional intelligence* . . These qualities will not only serve you in your personal life but will allow you to flourish in your career and relationships. . . I found a free emotional intelligence test that I will be sharing with you guys on my Facebook community in the next few weeks. I have also talked to students who tell me that an emotional intelligence test was part of their interview. So this is something you want to take seriously. . . We are the generation of people who are not brave. We want the illusion of adventure without really having to risk it. Social media is all about illusion, and our generation is slowly sinking in it. Making fake impression, focusing on something which is not real, making that fake reality in the world which is not real is all about us. We don’t dare to be real, we don’t want to be seen when we just woke up in the morning, when we cry, when we are upset, when we fail that exam, when we are falling apart. It’s hard for us to admit that we fail, and fail often. We try to buy things to make that impression, we attend places we don’t like just to show we do it as well, we try to impress people we don’t like. It seems like being real is seen as something miserable now, and perfection is presented as a reality of everyday life. Don’t betray your own values, and please, be yourself. Have that courage to become a person, you should’ve been a long time ago… Please follow me: -@Nurse__today__

So how do you find a job as new PA??💉 . You guys may remember that I went to PA school in NYC, and although I *learned* to love the city, I knew I wanted to be in more rural medicine - better yet: in my home state of VT for at least a little bit of time! 🌲🍁, which made me learn A LOT about the job hunting process! . So, here are my 🌟 TOP TIPS 🌟: ✔️document your achievements + update your CV as you go. - ✔️use google, indeed, direct practice/hospital websites and take advantage of networking you’ve done and schools resources - ✔️start early...but not too early: 3 MONTHS before graduation is a strong place to start ACTIVELY applying, but don’t get discouraged if you’re not hearing anything quite yet. Be more aggressive the closer you get to graduation + the PANCE. Before 3 months out, I suggest perusing what’s out there for job offers in your desired location/speciality/etc. just to get a sense - ✔️ALWAYS write a unique COVER LETTER for each position. Yes, it’s tedious, but it’s genuine rather than generic. I probs have somewhere around 20+ on my desktop still 🙈 - ✔️be open to a RECRUITER. ❌some of these can be a little much, but I ended up working with a FANTASTIC recruiter who helped me nail the job and got me a sweet offer in a rural area! ✅ For those looking for a hospital-based job: try to find the hospital recruiter email on their online applications or directly reach out. I’ve heard success with this too! P.s. using a recruiter is NOT required, but can be helpful! - ✔️be open to COMPROMISE. In many areas the PA job openings are booming, but it still can be difficult to find the right one for YOU - in the right location/specialty/salary/etc. As a new grad, it’s hard to have that kind of experience to give us leverage when it comes to finding the *perfect* job. Trust me - it’s out there but may look different: I compromised a little on location, but ended up getting the job of my dreams in a really awesome area that I’ve come to love. . . Okay, so those are my quick tips! Thinking of doing a post regarding offer letters and when/what to negotiate as a new grad sometime too! ✌🏼 . . Let me know if you’d want that or if you have extra tips! 👇🏼

I lost it. * * I remember finishing that segment… and just staring blankly into space. Mouthing the words, “What tha fuck” to myself. To say I was panicking was an understatement. * * But that’s the thing. It was all in my head. The panic and the fear were far greater than my knowledge deficit. I knew the material. It was vast and unending, but I had studied my ass off. I had done the work. The thousands of hours of lost sleep. The endless pots of coffee. And the miles-long pages of notes. I just needed to focus my mind and take it one small step at at time. * * It’s all survivable. It’s all doable. You just have to put in the work. You just have to calm your mind. Take one baby-step at a time. * * I’m living proof it can be done.

“My name’s Jacob but some call me jake, Jakey, young tattoo boy, Mr. Jacob, and every other name that starts with J (Jason, Josh, etc.) . I’m 21 and I’ve been an LPN for a little over 6 months. I work as a floor nurse at a 500+ patient sub acute/long term rehab facility. It’s insanely hard juggling around 40 basically med/surge patients but I’ve honestly learned to love it. I’m trying to get into management before I’m 22 just for the bragging rights but I’m currently in school for my BSN and dreaming of being a CRNA. I had no idea what I was doing at first but my one bit of advice, that I gave to my very first trainee last week, is get the patients to love you and everything else follows.” Please follow me: [email protected]_Nurse_of_heart_

Day 7/12 Days of Therapy- Play doh!! . Play doh is great for sensory play & fine motor development! It always holds my 2 year olds attention & there are so many ways to describe & play with play doh ("smash, roll, ball, poke, cut") not to mention it's my favorite activity for targeting "ssss" which is a later-developing sound! . . PS: "Space ship" is not a typical target for 2 year olds. 🤣 . . #slpmama #speechtherapy #speechlanguagepathologist #earlyintervention #specialneeds #specialneedsmoms #heartmama #CHDawareness #chargesyndrome #therapy #momboss #kindness #CHDaware #tubiebaby #nicumom #cvicu #hearingloss #medicalmom #advocate
