Want to know one of my pet peeves? 🙃
When a business makes a brand decision based solely on what someone else is doing. Similarly, when a brand constantly compares themselves to their competitors.
Have you heard the Seuss quote, “There’s no one out there youer than you.”? It holds up for your brand, my friends!
Think about it: no brand achieved monumental and sustainable success by being *as good as* their competitors.
Don’t get me wrong, competitor maps, market research - it’s all valuable information to know where you live in the mix of it all. However, when you make decisions *solely* based on what your industry, competitor, or market is doing, you are likely *reacting* to temporary circumstances out of fear or ego. I want to challenge you to, instead *respond* to your observations by asking yourself the following:
What is the core purpose (your ‘why’) of my brand and business?
Will these changes support my ‘why’ in an authentic and sustainable way?
Do these changes help me lead with authenticity and innovation?
Do I like what X business did because it would authentically fit my brand, or because it authentically fits THEIR brand? Do we share the same ‘why’? .
It’s natural to compare and it’s natural to respond what other people are doing in their business. But remember, just because a decision is beneficial for someone else, doesn’t mean it’s beneficial for you. Give yourself more credit - you’re like a business unicorn! Brand yourself as such and know that the best trajectory is the one that’s authentically yours.
